Parallels Bug – root login reset when change hostname

June 15th, 2009

Sent this to Parallels yesterday – hope they fix it..

==================================

Hi,

This weekend after 5 months accessed the Parallels control panel and “corrected” my server from the initial hostname, and did other maint and stumbled onto a bug, well what seems to me a bug.
It can be replicated like this:
For purposes of this say root was originally “root#ABC” and the new one is “root#DEF”
1. At the command line of the VPS, change root to something else, in this case change from root#ABC to root#DEF

2. In the Parallels automation change the hostname of the VPS.

3. The root password will now be set back to the old one.

I’d like to have been warned instead of wondering for a few hours why my server root password changed. Glad to know why – and that it was not rooted.

Sorbs having issues with our IP block

August 9th, 2008

Sorbs has been unresponsive to our requests to have our IP block (207.246.200.16/28) re-listed as a static IP block. Our IP block used to be a dynamic IP block, like those for DSL and dialup. Dynamic IP’s are good to block mail from – since most legitimate users have a real mail server with a static IP to connect and send from. Any home computer sending email – well most have no business reason to send email. It’s either a home server or a spam spitting zombie. If you do want to send email from a home system, one can set up smart hosting where outgoing mail is relayed via a real email server.

So, why Sorbs is still listing us – not sure. Any sysadmin’s that use SORBS for spam blocking will block email from these servers also. We only use Spamhaus for blocking, plus their LASSO list to deal with Bogons.

Hosting to start soon

May 6th, 2007

More details as I get closer to getting this set up – basically shared hosting is good for some, I am eager to get my own hardware set-up to better manage and handle clients and those looking for un-crowded, relaxed servers.. More to come!!
